TWO TO FOUR YEARS RIGOROUS IMPRISONMENT TO PROJECT DIRECTOR OF NHAI AND ANOTHER ACCUSED IN SEPARATE CASES

The Designated Court, Ernakulam (Kerala) has sentenced Shri Bitla Venugopal, former Project Director, National Highways Authority of India, Palakkad, to undergo two years Rigorous Imprisonment with a fine of Rs.30 lakh in a Disproportionate Assets case.

CBI had registered a case on the allegations that Shri Bitla Venugopal, while working as Project Director, National Highways Authority of India, Project Implementation Unit, Palakkad, during the period 01.04.2004 to 08.06.2008 had amassed assets in his name and in the name of his family members disproportionate to his known sources of his income to the tune of Rs.29,15,345/- (approx) . After investigation, a chargesheet was filed in the Designated Court.

In another case, the ACMM, Rouse Avenue Courts, New Delhi has sentenced Shri Satyapal Singh, an accused to undergo four years Rigorous Imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 15 lakh in a CBI case. Out of Rs.15 lakh, an amount of Rs.12 lakh shall be paid to the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, New Delhi as compensation.

In another case, the ACMM, Rouse Avenue Courts, New Delhi has sentenced Shri Satyapal Singh, an accused to undergo four years Rigorous Imprisonment with a fine of Rs. 15 lakh in a CBI case. Out of Rs.15 lakh, an amount of Rs.12 lakh shall be paid to the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications, New Delhi as compensation.

CBI had registered the case on 19.04.2004 on a complaint from the Department of Posts, New Delhi. It was alleged that the accused used fake franking dies and impressions and defrauded the Department of Posts to the tune of Rs.10,29,934/-(approx). After investigation, a chargesheet was filed u/s 120 B r/w section 420, 467, 468 and 471 of IPC and for substantive offences thereunder.

The Trial Courts found the accused guilty and convicted them.
