CBI SECURES CONVICTION IN TWO WILDLIFE CASES RELATED TO TIGER BODY PARTS SMUGGLING

The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ernakulam(Kerala) has sentenced Shri Gireesh, resident of Palackal House, Nedumkandam, Manjappetty, Idukki (Kerala) and Shri Siby Jose, resident of Cheengallel House, Parathode, Udumbachola, Idukki (both private persons) to undergo three years Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs.10,000/-each.

CBI had registered the case on the allegations that the accused persons entered into a criminal conspiracy at Nedumkandam, Adimali & other places during the year 2005. The accused persons encroached the Reserve Forest of Munnar Forest Division, Idukki (Kerala), killed a tiger and took the tiger skin for selling. The tiger skin was seized by the forest officials on 22.07.2005 from the residence of accused.

The Trial Court convicted the two accused while acquitting four other accused.

In another case, the ACMM, Tis Hazari Courts, Delhi has sentenced Shri Mangal Lama @Tashi (Nepali national) to undergo five years rigorous imprisonment with fine of Rs.25,000/- each for offences U/s 51 r/w 49 & 49(B) of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

The accused was intercepted by CBI on 27.05.2018 while he was in possession of 7.24 kg of tiger bones/body parts for its delivery to unknown persons. After investigation, a complaint was filed in the Court on 25.07.2018. The trial of this wildlife case was taken up expeditiously by the Hon'ble Court and it was completed in 102 days.

The Court found the accused guilty and convicted him.
