CBI ARRESTS A COMMISSIONER OF INCOME TAX AND THREE OTHERS IN AN ALLEGED BRIBERY CASE

The Central Bureau of Investigation has arrested a Commissioner of Income Tax (Audit), Guwahati; an Income Tax Officer (Audit), Guwahati; a private person and an Advocate in an alleged bribery case.

CBI has registered a case u/s 7, 11, 12 & 13(2) r/w Sec 13(1)(d) of PC Act and Section 120B of IPC against a Commissioner of Income Tax(Audit), Guwahati; An Income Tax Officer (Audit), Guwahati, Aayakar Bhawan, Guwahati; Two Advocates; a Director of private firm based at Jorhat(Assam) and unknown others. It was alleged that during 2017-18, the Commissioner of Income Tax(Audit), Guwahati with additional charge of Jorhat has entered into a conspiracy with Income Tax Officer (Audit), Guwahati and two other accused & said private firm and unknown others, and in pursuance thereof, the Commissioner agreed to show undue favour to the Director of said private firm by passing favourable order in an appeal arising out of assessment done in respect of the company of said Director. The Commissioner allegedly made attempts to obtain illegal gratification to the tune of Rs.50 lakh(approx) for himself and the Income Tax Officer through said accused.


Searches were conducted at premises of accused in Guwahati, Jorhat, Nagaon, Shilong, Noida, Delhi and other places which led to recovery of certain incriminating documents. A sum of Rs.40 Lakh(approx) allegedly meant for the accused IT Officials were also recovered from one of the accused/middleman

The arrested accused are being produced today before the Special Judicial Magistrate, Guwahati.
