DEATH SENTENCE TO TWO ACCUSED; LIFE IMPRISONMENT TO TWO ACCUSED AND TEN YEARS RIGOROUS IMPRISONMENT TO ONE ACCUSED IN THE MUMBAI SERIAL BLAST CASE

            The Designated Court at Mumbai has today awarded Death Sentence to accused Firoz Abdul Rashid Khan & Taher Merchand @ Taher Taklya; Life Imprisonment to two accused Abu Salem & Karrimullah Osan Khan and ten years Rigorous Imprisonment to accused Riyaz Ahmed Siddhiqi. One more accused Mustafa Ahmed Dossa expired on 28.06.2017. The Court has acquitted accused Abdul Kayyum.

            On 12.03.1993, there was a series of Bomb explosion in the city of Mumbai, which resulted in death of 257 persons, injury to 713 persons and caused damage to property worth Rs.27 crores(approx). The Bomb explosions were the outcome of a larger conspiracy hatched in Dubai, Mumbai and other places in India. Initially, the investigation was conducted by Mumbai Police. These were altogether 27 crimes registered at various Police stations in respect of various incident connected to the serial blast. On 04.11.1993, Mumbai Crime Branch had filed a consolidated chargesheet.

            Further investigation & the trial was transferred to CBI on 19.11.1993.

            After conducting thorough investigation, CBI filed a chargesheet in the Designated Court at Mumbai. The trial Court convicted 100 accused persons on 31.07.2007 including one to undergo Death Sentence. In the appeal against conviction, the Hon’ble Supreme Court had confirmed the conviction except two of the accused. The death sentence of one of the accused viz. Yakub Razak Memon was confirmed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court. He was executed on 30th of July, 2015.

            The seven accused i.e Mustafa Ahmed Dossa (deported from Dubai); Abu Salem (extradited from Portugal); Riyaz Ahmed Siddhiqui; Abdul Kayyum; Karrimullah Osan Khan; Firoz Abdul Rashid Khan and Taher Merchant @ Taher Taklya (extradited from Dubai) were facing trial. These accused were earlier absconding and apprehended later.

            Strenuous efforts are being made to trace the remaining 30 absconding accused who are evading the trial.
